Harpers Under The Sky
The painting Harpers Under The Sky, focuses on the beauty of a universal language spoken in the moment of friends and music. The textures of the fabrics are used to great effect, in expressing that music is universal, even if it is among those who are “cut from an entirely different cloth.” (Pun intended).
With the use of flowing and sheer fabrics, to soft and ridged fabrics, the painting ensemble represents a special moment and universal relationship between the harpers and the music being made. The silky coiled hair, was created to illustrate being as one, when engaging in music. And finally the lever harps they hold, represent the universal and communal language of music. No matter the direction that the harpers are playing, in this painting, what is being portrayed is that music brings all those that are different, together, to create something beautiful. let’s take a closer look at the doll ensemble.
This painting is made up of four colorful handmade cloth dolls. Some dolls were made with a soft and ridged brown cotton knit, fabric. Some dolls were made with a smooth knit material. The hair, made from a silky, nylon thread, was twisted into little coils for the style of tight curls. Here, the creation of the universal relationship is subtly presented here.
The dolls are dressed in flowing gowns of a sheer rayon fabric. The dresses have been splashed with acrylic paint. The concept of the design in the dresses is to indicate a ensemble or oneness. However, in the depths of their dresses, each doll has it’s own unique style. That there is an individual authenticity that is present, for each doll. The free flowing fabric was chosen for these dolls, to express how the two assets of uniqueness and the free flowing of musicianship can come together. Here in this painting, one can begin to see the “threads” of music being developed as a universal language.
Each doll has it’s own harp, made from stiff suede, and then covered with soft leather. The leather was then painted with acrylic to create a smooth surface. There are bumps, ridges in the harps, as this represents the concepts of the mountainous times the harps were being played. But the smoothness of the paint, represents the pristine sound of the instrument, as it is constantly, engaged by the harpists. This is where the emotional level has been introduced and the universal language of musicianship has been established.
Finally, the dolls were placed on a background of black velvet, that was decorated, with an array of colorful stars. Above them, are painted, synthetic pearls, that were transformed into lights. The pearly lights were place into covers (or light fixture) made of suede, painted with silver acrylic paint.
With this entire combo, a stage was created for the harpers, showing to all who look upon this painting, how uniqueness, individual authenticity and musicianship can bring about something so beautiful and universal.
