LIZJUL MUSIC DOLLSDoes music actually make the world go round? Does the earth move
when music is played? Music is moveable. Whether it be dancing to the rhythm of the music or being emotionally moved
by the melodies. Music is able to generate a good deal of energy. It is an energy that seems to propel us to listen,
to respond to it; Singing, dancing, meditating and reflecting. I believe that music has a way of channeling itself into
our hearts and our minds, in a way that we can understand, and welcome its presence.
Music is emotional,
as it can mirror our emotions, and our thoughts. It is like a painting of our selves. As most art forms, through the artists
and expression, music can reflect the happenings of today and the happenings within us. Now, there are many ways all of us
have in expressing the joy of music. Some listen to it, some of us dance to us, whether it be professionally or just
for fun, then there are those who play it. The musicians.
A couple of years ago I took up guitar lessons with
my Dad as the teacher. I play now and then, practicing my chords mostly and practicing my finger picking. Presently
I have four guitars, my Dad's old classical guitar from the 60s, then my Dad bought one for me as a birthday gift, and
then I purchased a folk guitar. Oh, and I also have an electric guitar, which came with a small amplifier. I love playing
the guitar; I love the melodic sounds that come from it and love the vibrations of the strings that can fill the room with
a rich sound. It's also great to see my progress over the years. I have a little story tell you. It tells you just how
universal music is, not just to us as humans, but to animals as well. I had a bunny rabbit who I named Harrison.
A wonderful bunny, who demanded to be treated like a King. One day my parents were visiting my apartment in Tarrytown.
Harrison was out of his cage, trampling around the living room, while I kept a close eye on him. My Dad came into the
living room and sat down to play the guitar. When he did, my Harrison stopped his excavating; laid down at my Dad's feet
and stayed put. Usually when he wants to rest, he goes under the coffee table. This time he chose to be near my
Dad. He seemed to be drawn by the vibrations of the guitar. Either that or he just liked my Dad, as they are both males.
This seemed to happen every time my Dad or I took out the guitar and played. Talk about the joy of music and most specifically
music through the guitar.
I decided to express my art of arts in music through my dolls. There
are a lot of instruments that I'd like to explore, particularly the string instruments. In a way, to share a tib
bit with you, my exploration and creation with my dolls and musical instruments are a reflection of what is close to me.
I'll leave this statement open for interpretation. Because as you will see in the next couple of days, the things
I create, have a lot to do with what's happening in my live, in terms of music. I created a new collection,
of what I simply call "Dolls And Music". Now with music, there is an infinite, smorgasbord of ideas to run with.
The list is endless. To create this collection, I had fun finding various materials to make the instruments and the
dolls costuming. I used acrylic paints, jewelry findings like beads, buttons, metal pieces. Believe or not, I also had
to match up the right instrument with the appropriate doll. I mean the instrument chooses the musician, right?
The outcome was surprising. But that's not all. What came out of this artistic conception was that lyrics
came into play. How? You will see it in the coming weeks.
