Words From Elizabeth, About Why She Wrote The Book
"Sounds Like A Doll"

“I wrote these stories, because of my experience with dolls. Creating dolls, and creating this small business has done a lot of good for my personal development. I find that they offer me a chance to express myself. Not just through the art form, but through other parts of my life as well.  Through making dolls, as silly as it may sound, has helped me to take courage and branch out and generate energy into other gifts that were given to me; Areas, such as writing, of which I would never have thought possible for me in my earlier years. I was shy and quite timid.  To be able to take my imagination and allow it to quench me with ideas that are my own, and share them with others, is a fortune I never dreamed could happen.”

February 2008

Key Turning

The key characters within the stories are adults and belong to a professional trade: a fashion designer, hairstylist and salon owner, interior/exterior home designer, production manager.  Other characters are villagers, involved in a quest to change the way they live or an academic center, whose job is to teach earnest participants to find their purpose in life and to stay on a path of self- discovery and change.

Sounds Like A Doll

The Stories

Sounds-is the divine intervention of creativity and imagination.  Like A Doll - is the subtle presence of dolls, inspiring a non suspecting character to take their talents and allow the simple presence of doll art to clear a path for a change in disposition, a change in life's vision, a change in life.

The characters of each short story use their talents to better their ventures and most importantly better their lives and well being through the inspired and subtle presence of doll art. Though these characters are not doll makers, nor are they passionate advocates of them, they believe that creativity in the colors and designs of dolls, have the capacity to open their minds and hearts to inspiration and allow it to change there prospective on life for the greater good.

Sounds Like A Doll, is a testament, to the powerful presence of dolls , the divine intervention, the message of how doll artistry can play a pivotal part in changing the life of individuals who come in contact with them. And change it for the better.

A Testament To That of Inspiration In Dolls

Doll artistry has the capacity to awaken the depths of creativity within the hearts of individuals. Deep within the confounds of creativity there is imagination, revelation and passion; And through these elements, there is a fulfillment that lingers and can be experienced and achieved through the doll art. That fulfillment is inspiration.

There is a feeling of inspiration that comes to doll artists when they are in the creative moment. It is like a divine intervention with a message that doll artistry can bring a feeling of completeness, and most importantly, change the course of one's life. And change it for the better. Many doll artists have expressed experiences of being in very stressful jobs, where there is no room for creativity or for expressing the gifts they have. Also not being in an environment that would embrace it or allow it to flourish and grow. And that work seems fully routine and unfulfilled. This is quite heavy on the soul. Sadness comes fast; exhaustion is produced and fueled with the fires of fear. But through doll artistry a new path is opened up. Whether it is a career change or a new business venture, individuals who are in the midst of doll artistry or doll making practices, find themselves making decisions on what to do with their artistic side and how it can better their lives. Some decide to become artists, some become teachers of the doll art form. Others make the decision to choose alternative artistic ventures, such as interior designing, in addition to their doll art. Through the creativity of doll artistry, inspiration is allowed to change the life of an individual and change it for the better.

This is what is described as Sounds Like A Doll.

Betty Rocks

As Betty began to close her shop for the day, she began to feel a little lost. Or maybe not lost, but she just didn’t feel the same as she used to.  She felt exhausted before, but she had the sense that something was missing.  “Was that it?” she thought.  She pondered as she closed the door of her Salon behind her.  She looked around her and viewed all the department stores, shops, and boutiques and continued to think about the matter.  “What is happening?” she asked herself.  She then brushed it off and gave it up for just feeling tired at the end of the day. “Betty, you need rest,” she said to herself.  She then went home to her family and the day closed with that.

The next day at the salon, she felt a bit rested, but there was still that nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right.  Or at least there was something she needed to do, but she didn’t know what.  “I’m fine personally, but something is missing,” she thought to herself as she took a break in the afternoon, walking the downtown streets of Philly.  She walked by the boutiques and department store windows and began to notice something different.  There were a lot of changes from the prior weeks and months.  There were different things happening with the clothes and fashion.  The material and colors seemed vibrant and daring in hue.  She stared closely and just realized that a trend was happening.  She began to think. “If this is a sign of the changing of times, then shouldn’t there be something I should be doing as well?”  Her thoughts trailed away, and realizing time was running away from her, she hurried back to the salon.

The Production of Imagination

"The C-42s believe that we not only see with our eyes, but with our many senses, our hearing, our good judgments, all these sources are what we want people to use and to experience. It’s not just with what they see but what they feel.  We want to make it memorable for the audience, other than just being a regular band that plays and then goes home.  You see what I’m saying?” said Den.  Julia was lost for words.  “Yes we do,” said Armand.  “What we can do is start to build on some ideas, and see how we construct a setting that would enhance the ambience of the group and the music.” We will come up with a couple of settings, and you could choose the one that is most suitable for you.  How would that be?” asked Armand. Armand nodded at Julia, to ensure the collaboration between the two of them.  She nodded back.  “That sounds great to me. But please, because of our timing, we want you to make the decision on what is to be done,” said Den.  “Then we will be back in touch with you in a couple of days and let you know what we plan to do?” said Armand. “Very good,” said Den.  They discussed other matters such as contracts and payments, which go along with the business, and then they ended the call.  Julia came out with a deep sigh.  Everyone else was a bit uncertain about what lied ahead.  “Ok everyone, we will start some brainstorming and will narrow it down to sometime this week.  Course we have to do it fairly soon. It’s February and the concert is in May.  We’ll be setting up the meeting time with all of us including the stage crew. Ok? So you’ll hear from us,” said Julia.  The production crew nodded and left the blue table.  Julia looked at Armand and said, “what in hells fire are we going to do?” she whispered.  Letting all the panic out now for the sake of the production crew, so that they may not hear the feeling of a rushing and crashing apprehension that had erupted inside her. “What are we going to do?”

The Fashion Designer

What a crazy inscription,” he thought.   “And what does it mean be in the now and read ahead?” he said with a frown.  “Why am I even reading this stuff?”  He tossed the book aside and the book opened to a page that had pictures and a paragraph of text in the foreground.  The picture was of figurines costumed in strange designs.  Seeing this, he looked curiously at the book that was splayed open on the floor.  He came closer to the book, and observed that the figurines, were in fact, dolls.  “Is that suede?” he asked.  Being familiar with fabrics, he recognized the textile right away.  He picked up the book, and looked at the pictures, and yes, it was suede. As he stared at the picture, he found himself stroking the page.  “It is suede,” he whispered to himself.  What drew his attention was the braided sash that went around one of the doll’s garment.  “Hmm… It looks braided but…” He read the caption under the picture and saw typed words that said, “crocheted and stitched leather suede.”  “Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.  It is possible to do this. This is even done on these dolls,” he thought to himself.  He looked at the picture once again, and then got up from the floor and walked out of the room of the studio, book in hand.  He went to his warehouse where all his designs were implemented.  With the book still in his hand he yelled, “Hama Hama!”  Hama turned in the direction of the yell.  “Hey,” he said.  “Where’s the fire?” he asked over the noise, with a smirk on his face.  “Take a look at this Hama,” said Lauf.

A Keepsake From Above

There was an uncertainty of how it happened, but several versions of stories developed about how their mascot had simply disappeared. Some of the villagers believed it had been hidden away or worse, stolen.  Others supposed that the heavy winds must have taken it away.  ‘Course there hadn’t been enough wind to even carry a leaf, let alone a statue. Then there were others who started to believe that maybe there hadn’t been a statue, that maybe it had existed only in their imagination.  Further speculations were made to search for the answer of this mystery.  There was one thing that they all agreed upon: the person, who created the mascot, had departed the lands, and because of this, the mascot had gone.  And what was the mascot?  No one could remember.  There was no record or picture of it.  Even I don’t know, and I’m narrating the story.  But the villagers had an inkling that the mascot was a statue, which stood about 17 feet tall and was bronze. Some believed it was gold.  They came to this conclusion because of a large indentation in the grass, where the statue was believed to have stood.  Also, there were remnants of metal pieces scattered on the ground in that particular area. But the elders of the village did know for sure who made the statue.  It was a man by the name of Ed Minsey.  The elder villagers believed that the mascot might have been a statue of him.  They weren’t really sure if Mr. Ed Minsey had passed on or just left.  All they knew was that the winds had changed and the land was gloomier than ever.

The Scholars of The Acenscion

He was dressed in a deep sapphire blue cassock, that seemed to be illuminating against his midnight skin. His hair was gray and his face was etched and his eyes were filled with wisdom.  “Good afternoon, fellow pupils and the Ascension staff,” he said in a deep and strong voice.  “I am Reverend Sagarp Adão Meddeala.  You may call me Reverend.”    Everyone chuckled. The Reverend smiled.  “I’m glad you are responsive to my dry humor.  As my name is quite difficult for some, I thought I would begin with that introduction.  Welcome everyone, welcome.”  During the Reverend’s speech, a few things were happening.  The seats began to move very slowly around the statue once again.  The seats were circling the Reverend so that each group of participants could have a better chance to hear and see the Reverend’s face and gestures.  Then, there was the matter of the walls.  On the walls of the Rotunda, there were gray granite square tiles that were rotating.  Individual ones were flipping and turning, making gentle clicking sounds.  And if you listen long enough, it almost sounded like drops of water.  The Reverend then began his orientation of the Ascension Center.  “In this place you learn not just about the artist in you or the skills you have or will acquire.  No.  It is about what is inside of you.  You and the aura of your making and that of which surrounds you, are the gifts that you will bring to many.  Here, your gifts will gain momentum.  Your gifts and talents will stretch far and wide, further than your imagination has ever taken you.  You will not only learn to represent the best you are, you will also be able to pull from all forms of inspiration to create the master within and who you were meant to be in the light of the Mighty One. Now, be warned, this is not an easy task.  It is a life’s work to make it and to perfect it.  In this world, perfection is what we aim for. But it should be the last thing we think of, because it is not important. What is important is that you know where your energies come from to help you to succeed.

Nina's Images and Designs

webassets/SLAD.jpg

On Thursday morning, Nina gathered her wits, and focused on what she needed to know from Mr. Hunklebettergetitright, in order to generate some idea of what he was looking for.  It was an interesting task for her at hand to build that understanding between herself and the client.  That way, she could then, put the pieces together on how she would approach producing a blue print of some sort, to demonstrate how her company could construct his home.  Nina entered the building of Lock, Stock & Barrel.  It was your normal high rise building in the business district of Philadelphia.  She got to the floor of Mr. Hunklebettergetitright’s office.  I shall describe the décor to you.  In Nina’s opinion, the décor was pretty neutral and minimal.  Sand color carpets, rectangular halls with light fixtures that looked like large lampposts.  The office cubicles were more like little offices in square shaped ice cubes, which was made entirely of glass, the trimming made of iron.  She came to the front desk and announced her appointment time.   “Good afternoon, I’m a little early, I’m Nina from Images and Dream Designs.  I have an appointment with Mr. Hunklebettergetitright. I can surely wait if need be,” said Nina.  The man behind the desk said it was fine, and announced her arrival to Mr. Hunklebettergetitright.  Within two seconds, Mr. Joseph Hunklebettergetitright came out to greet Nina.  He was a very tall, earth tone brown man, lean and had a thick mustache and thick eyebrows.  His hair was graying at the temples of his head.  He came towards Nina, stretched out his hand, and said “Joseph Hunklebettergetitright.”  “Nina, of Images and Dream Designs,” she said.  He shook Nina’s hand, and then, gestured her toward the direction of his office. He was not at all what Nina expected.  “Either he really needs the house done and is in great despair, or he couldn’t be bothered,” thought Nina.  Or maybe he didn’t want to appear to eager or give any idea that he needed help. In any case his silent greeting was no match for the way he was on the phone.  There was something, but what was it?
