Hello To All and Those New To Doll Artistry
We have been covering styles, used in doll artistry, such as steampunk and folk. Now I want talk with you about dolls with themes. With doll artistry, as well as other art forms, you have the ability to express various concepts and themes. We want to present to you the concept of music, particularly, string instruments, shown in the photo you see in this article. The name of the doll of art is Viola, the Violinist.
Now, as an introduction, I want to bring your attention to the name of the doll, Viola. Viola, asyou may know, is a string instrument. It is similar to a violin, only the viola, has a slightly larger body than the violin. The difference, is that the Viola has a deeper sound. The doll is holding a violin in her hand, along with a bow in the other. What we wanted to present to you, is the beauty of string instruments. As you can see, we have the violin with gold trim. Now, I draw your attention to the doll’s rich golden, almost copper color hair, made from strands of silk threads. There is a correlation here. The golden, almost copper color hair, is to represent the strings of the viola.
Now, the strings of a viola, are certainly not squiggly or neither all over the place, such as Viola, the doll, has with her hair. But there is a richness and a deep tone to the coloring of the doll’s hair. This represents the deep sound of a viola. This is how the artist represents concepts in doll artistry. It is the artist’s way, in this case, of acknowledging the other similar instrument and the wonderful qualities the viola has.
Finally, the doll artist shows the appreciation for string instruments within the dress. Underneath the lacy cape, is a hand braided trim. This is to indicate, not only the presence of strings but also the strength and the capacity of sound, from the strings. The trim is actually crocheted, to get the braided look and is slightly thick. But the trim that is hand crocheted, is made from a sateen silky fabric. The concept here, is that the strings maybe strong, (indicated in the use of crocheted trim) but the sound can be gentle, deep or soft (indicated with the use of sateen, silky fabric.) Incidentally, as you look closely, the sateen fabric, has a sheen to it, along with a smooth texture.
Well there you have it, another form of doll artistry. To get a good look at the doll fully costumed, and to view the doll more closely, check out the live video on Viola the Violinist.
